Hello! I’m Shaan, and I’m your new Impact Development Officer at BVSC.
I started this job about a month ago, and I’ve had spent a lot of time so far studying handover notes, meeting people, and studying yet more handover notes. While there’s definitely been a lot of interesting reading, I’ve been floored by how many organisations and how many people, are working tirelessly to provide support to vulnerable people and worthwhile projects across Bexley. It’s been a wonderful warm welcome to the sector and I can’t lie, I do keep feeling very smug about my new job.
For anyone that might be new to impact, the purpose of my job is to help charities in Bexley understand whether or not the work they do has the positive effect they’re aiming for. I’ll help you work out the important measures from the less important, strategize ways to incorporate data collection without adding hours onto everyone’s day, and then make this data work for us. I know, I know, it’s not an overly glamourous topic, but when we’re all running flawlessly monitored projects or writing beautiful funding applications I promise it will all seem very worth it.
Adam has done some fantastic work for this in his year and a half in this post. 28 organisations of varying sizes and needs were supported across Bexley to better demonstrate their impact. He provided 1:1 sessions, training courses, workshops, and created a portal of online resources so that Bexley charities have everything they need to start the impact journey (without it costing a penny). He was also able to work with funders and applicants to get projects up and running, all while being an exceptionally likeable person. He’s going to be a tough act to follow.
This project is only funded for one more year so I want to do my best to continue this work. We’re up against a lot of cuts (such is charity sector life) so being aware of impact is only becoming more important and it can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you don’t know how to get started. I’d like to invite everyone who wants to know a bit more about understanding their impact to email me at email@example.com. Whether you’re a seasoned pro with a one-off question, a new organisation that wants to get started on the right foot, or anything in between- by all means reach out and I’ll do everything I can to help. In my opinion, there's not much point in me coming in and prescribing a load things that aren't relevant or helpful to you, so I want this last year to be as focused as possible on what you need.
Let’s get to work!
