Fundraising Week 2016: Keynote Speech

Minister for Civil Society, Rob Wilson, spoke at the launch of Fundraising Week on the government's support for charity fundraising and reform.

 

Guidance for inspecting the effectiveness of local areas in fulfilling their new duties supporting children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

Ofestd has recently published the handbook, which is primarily a guide for inspectors on how to carry out local area inspections but should also support local areas in their self-evaluation and ongoing improvement.

It should be read alongside the framework.

 

Funding/ Awards  

 

Could you be a TSB local charity partner?

From May 9-22, TSB are taking nominations from charities that are keen to be a Local Charity Partner. After the success of last year's campaign which saw 480 local charities chosen by over 600 TSB branches across Britain, now could be your chance to benefit from the funds raised and time volunteered as a result of teaming up with a TSB branch.

Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust’s 2016 focus is: Children and Youth, with priority given to projects focussing on: homelessness, domestic abuse, prisoners/offenders, training and education, counselling and support, activities for those who have limited access or opportunities. They award small grants of £1000-3000 and the next deadline is 1 June.

The Weavers Company Benevolent Fund 

 

The next deadline is 1st August 2016

Priorities:

1. Helping disadvantaged young people 
The object of the fund is to support projects working with disadvantaged young people to ensure that they are given every possible chance to meet their full potential and to participate fully in society. We normally define young people as being aged from 5 to 30 years. 

2. Offenders and ex-offenders, particularly those under 30 years of age 
Many offenders and ex-offenders suffer from a variety of difficult and complex problems and they are amongst the most vulnerable members of society. We will fund work that addresses the social and economic problems faced by this group and their families, and provide them with support, life skills training and a way back into education, training and/or employment, so that they may reintegrate and make a positive contribution to society. 

We are especially interested in helping smaller organisations which offer direct services. They must be registered charities or in the process of applying for registration.

What will we fund? 

Size of organisation 
To be eligible for funding, local organisations such as those working in a village, estate or small town should normally have an income of less than about £100,000. Those working across the UK should normally have an income of not more than about £250,000. 

Funding Limit 
Grants are usually up to £15,000 per annum but smaller applications are also welcomed.

Duration of funding 
Grants may be awarded for up to three years. 

Pump-priming 
We particularly welcome applications for pump-priming grants from small community-based organisations where our grant would form a major element of the funding 

Core costs 
We will consider applications for core funding, such as general administration and training that enable an organisation to develop and maintain expertise. Only those organisations whose main purpose fits within our area of interest are eligible to apply.

Continuation funding 
We appreciate the importance of providing ongoing funding for successful projects, which have proved their worth. 

Emergency or deficit funding 
In exceptional circumstances, we may provide emergency or deficit funding for an established organisation. Applicants most likely to be granted emergency funding are charities which the Company knows or has previously supported.

The aim of the workshop is to understand the importance of good governance and particularly the role of the leadership team in delivering to an organisation's stated purpose.

May 19th How to build a one page business strategy  (Small Charities Coalition)

 The aim of this workshop is for all participants to be able to create a simple one page strategy that can then be used to develop a more in-depth plan at a later point. This one page strategy is also a really helpful tool when it comes to explaining the charity objectives to staff, volunteers, trustees and other stakeholders within your charity.

This course provides an overview of the expectations of public sector funders and outlines best practice in bidding to the public sector.

Both central and local government have moved away from grant-making to commissioning services from the third sector. This course provides an overview of the expectations of public sector funders and outlines best practice in bidding to the public sector.

This training course is supported by the Cabinet Office Small Charities Fundraising Training Programme.

This course is for bid writers, service managers, CEOs and senior managers – and anyone who would like to learn more about how to effectively engage in public service commissioning.

Time: 9.30am – 4.30pm

Cost: The training provided and all delegate materials are free of charge to FSI Small Charity Members and Associate Members.  However we require a £50 deposit to secure your booking, £40 is refunded to you on attendance and £10 is retained as a booking fee.

CLINKS BRIEFING: how PCCs can work with the voluntary sector

'Police and Crime Commissioners Generation 2.0: How you can work with the voluntary sector to reduce crime' is a Clinks briefing for Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) and PCC candidates outlining some key areas and activities which we believe PCC candidates should prioritise. These include taking the lead in engaging the voluntary sector, recognising the specific needs of women, Black, Asian minority ethnic people and young adults, and listening to those with lived experience. The briefing provides information about how PCCs can work with the voluntary sector to address these and gives examples of good practice by current PCCs. Download the briefing here

Better understanding of autism

A new National Autistic Society  report, Too Much Information: why the public needs to understand autism better, reveals how poor public understanding of autism is pushing autistic people and their families into isolation. Autistic people often find social situations difficult and struggle to filter out the sounds, smells, sights and information they experience, which means they feel overwhelmed by 'too much information' when out in public.  

 

Who's Who

Regional Voices has updated its Who's Who Guides to help voluntary and community sector organisations identify and make contact with people in health and care structures in each region. Their guides are produced by their regional VCS network organisations and are a convenient way to find information and contacts in one place. Information is included on organisations including NHS clinical commissioning groups, health and wellbeing boards, Healthwatch, commissioning support and CQC in each area.

 

Crisis Points Report

Buttle UK have been working with a consultancy in administrative data, since February to analyse 10 years’ worth of data from their database, this represents 125,000 grant applications made to Buttle UK from 10,000 referral agencies. The analysis is captured in the Crisis Points Report.

Our key Crisis Points Report findings:

  • Cities in the North of England, Midlands and Scotland, including Sheffield, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow and Bradford are home to the most vulnerable children and families in the UK, based on the volume of applications we have received.
  • While revealing that Buttle UK’s distribution is largely in line with expected levels of need, critically it also identified gaps, indicating risks of ‘hidden poverty’.  Some of these are based in unexpected areas such as Southern counties including Berkshire and Hampshire, as well as coastal areas.
  • Over 62% of cases survive on less than £10,000 a year and that lone parents account for nearly two thirds of cases. 
  • Five principal drivers of family crisis have been established: parental inability to cope, children’s health and development problems, estrangement and isolation, child emotional and behavioural problems and abuse/neglect.
  • Application numbers are consistently high during summer months, where we expect families are feeling the pressure of not having school support and free meals

Institute of Fundraising London Mentoring Scheme

 

This one-to-one scheme is possible due to the generosity of the City Bridge Trust who are funding the costs for those from small charities to participate in this programme. Facilitating regular face-to-face meetings between mentor and mentee, this is open to members and non-members of the IoF.

Bexley Local Safeguarding Board self-harm guidance evaluation

 

In July last year the Bexley Safeguarding Children Board published practice guidance on self-harm behaviours.  We would like to evaluate its use and effectiveness via a short and quick-to-complete Survey Monkey questionnaire.  Please pass this message on to your staff, colleagues and partners as required.
